Want free ringtones on your Telus/Koodo/Bell Samsung m540 (Rant, Slyde, TAAG, whatever…)? Its not easy. Cellular phone carriers make quite the effort to force you into buying their astonishngly overpriced, low quality ringtones. But there is hope.

Following these instructions and these instructions (more or less) on HowardForums I was able to get custom ringtones on a Telus m540.

My Suggestions

Don’t use UniCDMA. Get ahold of the CDMA Workshop software instead.

Don’t waste your money on a legit ringtone, download and edit the ones below. (I wasted hours trying to make them from scratch)

If you’re having lots of trouble try the sample files I’ve included in this post without any edits first. They should work. Leave me a comment or go post in one of the forum topics on HoFo if you need some help.

Included for you here are a sample 11.txt, 11.dd and 11.gc file (its Speechless by Lady GaGa in case you’re wondering). To make your own ringtone follow all the linked instructions (CDMA Workshop method is best) then edit my .txt and .dd files, replace the .gc with your own .mp3 and upload to the folders described in the HoFo instructions. Best luck.

UPDATE: It magically started working, still not sure what happened..

This is an update for people trying to use MMS / picture messages on their Telus iPhone. If it still isn’t working you’re not alone. After nearly three months we are without a solution, and worse Big T isn’t even sure of the problem yet.

I posted this information on Howard Forums a week ago:

-The issue has a KIT (known issue ticket) with hundreds of customers attached, this is likely only a very small fraction of those affected.
-Only [some] CDMA –> HSPA accounts are affected, and only iPhones. New accounts appear to be fine.
-Telus has known about the problem since November 20, and Operations has been working with it since.
-Up and ups at Telus have been alerted about the issue and its a ‘priority’.
-They couldn’t figure out what’s wrong, so they had to contact a third-party. Sounds like its Openwave since they control MMS gateway.

And the biggest news is that the KIT promised more information this week. So hopefully tomorrow or early next week we should at least know what the problem is, and hopefully see a fix.

But more than a week has passed and no update is available. I am extremely irritated by how closed Telus has been on this issue. I’ve spoken to more than a dozen reps that, while friendly, have been given absolutely no concrete information about the problem. I want to know what the problem is yesterday and I want a solution now.

Update 1 (March): This problem has been resolved. Thanks Telus!
Update 2 (April): Attached carrier file is now 5.2 (inc VVM settings).

I finally got an iPhone and I’m loving it so far. Everything is working swell, except for MMS (picture messaging) with other Telus clients. Its a quirky situation:

I can’t send MMS to other Telus clients

I can receive MMS from other Telus clients

I can send an receive from non-Telus clients (Rogers, Fido, Bell)

I don’t know what’s going on at Telus. They have been very friendly and understanding on the phone, but the data department seems a little brain dead on the issue. Its a “known issue”, but it hasn’t been resolved. They also closed all the tickets related to the problem without a fix. The rep I spoke with today said I should “check from time to time”. That’s not really an acceptable solution, but I have received a credit for %50 off last month and the promise of another if the issue isn’t resolved.

So no progress yet, and my only suggestion would be to email pictures instead at this point. Are you having the same problem?

Also I’ve attached the latest Telus Carrier Update file (5.1) for others who are on the troubleshooting journey….

My on-contract mobile died the other week and I had to consider my options. I’ve been using a Nokia 6265i with Telus for the past two years. It was pretty good phone, if not way too bulky. Then it started doing strange things. The phone would reboot for no reason, drop calls for no reason and it would forget the theme it was supposed to use. Then it started to take longer to boot up. That problem grew exponentially worse until one day on a trip to the US the phone stopped working completely. Apparently this a common problem with the phone; it just decides to drop dead on a whim.

Telus told me that, because I was already on contract and out-of-warranty, I would have to pay $250 for a “software fix”. I was also welcomed to pay the unsubsidized price (about $350+ for anything from this century) for a new phone, plus a $10 new activation/transfer fee. I understand that Telus is a business and needs to make money, but since I’ve been a customer for several years, and have three lines on my account, I figure they could have offered me something a little nicer. Tough luck.

Anyways, I wasn’t about to pay hundreds to get my old broken phone fixed. I settled on a getting a new phone. Since I plan on getting an iPhone with Fido after my contract expires next spring, it didn’t have to be that flashy. I stumbled upon the prepaid phones available from Futureshop and Bestbuy. They are brand-new phone from a couple years ago. I groaned, but settled on a KRZR k1m for only $79CDN.

Its actually a really good phone, and I’m liking it quite a lot. I never got into hacking my Nokia, but this little Moto is very hackable and I’ve made a number of adjustments. Its also pretty thin, and I like the external music controls. The cool thing about this (and probably other Motorola phones) is that a USB cable and software are included.

My only complaints about the phone are the horrible Telus music player, and the disparaging lack of Mac support. I’m happier with this phone than I ever was with my Nokia.

So there you have it. If you’re phone dies, or is lost or stolen, you have a cheaper option. Its not as nice as being able to swap a sim card like you can on GSM networks, but its better than shelling out $400 for a so-so kind of phone.
